Great Lakes Region and Canada
Described as lush, green, forested and diverse- the terrain that borders the North American Great Lakes ecosystem is rich in culture, wildlife, farming, and history. The region contains the largest continuous freshwater system in the world.
There are many jobs for a Kangal Dog to do in this beautiful northern landscape. Livestock Guardians are needed by sheep and goat farmers, producing meat, milk, and fiber. This area supports both large scale operations, as well as smaller artisan farms specializing in hand made products. Interest in historic livestock preservation is high, with many breeds being brought back to life by the careful stewardship of small farmers.
Conservation does not just extend to livestock, but also to our wild heritage. This is wolf country, and numbers of wolves are growing due to strong preservation movements for the disappearing large carnivores of our continent.
The Turkish Kangal Dog is one of the best livestock guardian dogs that can be found. Use of LGDs makes ecological sense. Farmers can sleep sound knowing their Kangal is on guard, and can also participate in maintaining a harmonious ecosystem.
The Kangal Dog is also a rare and precious breed, fast disappearing in its homeland and in need of our support both here and abroad. The GLKC pledges to work towards the preservation of this noble dog.
Please check back for upcoming profiles of our region. The area is
vibrant and unique, and we will offer some history, folklore, and culture-- and of course
resources for Kangal owners in our region.
